Kolkata Police Summon Prominent Figures for Allegedly Spreading Misinformation in Trainee Doctor Rape Case
In a significant development, the Kolkata Police have summoned Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Dr. Subarna Goswami, and BJP leader Locket Chatterjee for their alleged roles in spreading misleading information and revealing the identity of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The notices were issued on Sunday, requiring the individuals to report to the police headquarters at Lalbazar by 3 pm today. Dr. Sarkar and Dr. Goswami are accused of disseminating false information regarding the investigation and post-mortem report of the case. Dr. Goswami reportedly gave interviews alleging access to the post-mortem report, which purportedly contained details such as 150 mg of semen and a fractured pelvic bone, suggesting gang rape. The Kolkata Police have dismissed these claims as baseless and harmful rumors.
Additionally, BJP leader and former MP Locket Chatterjee has been summoned for allegedly disclosing the victim’s identity, a serious breach of Indian law. Police sources indicate that this disclosure, along with the spread of misinformation, has complicated the ongoing investigation.
The Kolkata Police have registered two separate cases: one for the dissemination of misleading information and another for the unlawful disclosure of the victim’s identity.
The situation is tense as the summoned individuals prepare to face questioning at Lalbazar. The body of the trainee doctor was discovered on the morning of August 9 in the seminar rooms of the Bengal government-run hospital. Civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, stationed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been arrested based on CCTV footage showing him entering the building where the doctor was found murdered.
The post-mortem report revealed that the victim was throttled to death, with her thyroid cartilage broken and a deep wound found in her private parts. The incident likely occurred between 3 am and 5 am on August 9.
In response to the horrific crime, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) held a 24-hour nationwide strike on August 17, which concluded this morning.
