SUTRA 2.0: Sustainable Trade Summit 2024 Advances Responsible Sourcing in Indian Markets

IDH held the second edition of its annual event, SUTRA 2.0: The Sustainable Trade Summit 2024, at The Oberoi, Gurugram, on October 17-18, 2024. With the theme “Accelerating Responsible Sourcing in Indian Markets,” the summit brought together around 400 industry leaders, policymakers, and sustainability experts to discuss the challenges and solutions to advance responsible sourcing and sustainable supply chains. Panel discussions at the summit focused on advancing sustainable farming, strengthening supply chain resilience, and accelerating public-private partnerships through technology. The summit highlighted the power of pre-competitive collaboration, with discussions on leveraging gender-responsive business models and innovative financing to drive sustainable trade. Breakout sessions explored key value chains such as spices, palm oil, coffee, and textiles, addressing sector-specific barriers and solutions. Additionally, the agenda featured cross-sectoral insights on sustainable procurement and regenerative agriculture, aiming to reshape industry practices for a more sustainable future.

The summit served as a platform to launch several new initiatives aimed at scaling sustainable sourcing in key sectors and addressing some of the pertinent challenges. These initiatives include pre-competitive collaborations in multiple sectors, as well as investment commitments to support smallholder farmers and promote climate-resilient agricultural practices.


The summit featured the launch of the India Sustainable Palm Oil Manifesto. The Manifesto seeks to unite stakeholders from the private sector, government, and civil society around a shared commitment to sustainable palm oil sourcing.


Additionally, The Life and Building Safety (LABS) Initiative and the National Safety Council (NSC) signed an MoU to enhance safety in the apparel and textile industries. The partnership will focus on knowledge sharing, training, and improving safety standards to protect workers and foster a culture of safety excellence.


A study facilitated by the Womens Safety Accelerator Fund (WSAF) on the Assam tea sector, launched alongside a handbook on addressing gender stereotypes, reveals the impact of gender-based violence on business outcomes through econometric analysis. The study highlights productivity and revenue losses, as well as additional costs tea estates face due to discrimination and violence against women workers, offering insights for tracking the return on investment in addressing these issues. The handbook, aimed at industry leaders, encourages awareness and reflection on unconscious biases from the boardroom to farms, fostering mindfulness and promoting gender equity across the value chain.


As the summit concluded, participants committed to translating the summit’s outcomes into actionable steps for businesses, governments, and civil society. IDH will continue driving sustainable trade by expanding the SUTRA 2.0 ecosystem to include more partnerships and projects that mainstream responsible sourcing practices across global value chains.

Kapsch TrafficCom Wins IRF Award for Satellite-tolling Project

This recognition underscores the innovative design, exceptional implementation, and the positive impact of the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System)-based tolling system on the countrys transportation infrastructure. The award ceremony took place on September 26, 2024, during the IRF Europe & Central Asia Congress Gala Dinner in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian Nationwide Tolling System
Launched in 2019 in partnership with Bulgarias Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA), this project transitioned the countrys tolling system from time-based vignettes to a distance-based model for heavy goods vehicles (HGV) using cutting-edge satellite tolling technology. The system covers over 16,000 kilometers of roads, managing electronic tolls for trucks and e-vignettes for passenger vehicles. By 2020, GNSS tolling for all HGVs was introduced, generating a 10% revenue increase from e-vignettes and additional gains from enhanced enforcement measures.

Kapsch worked closely with the RIA and consulting teams, coordinating seven specialized working groups for road infrastructure, data centers, tolling, enforcement, and payment systems. Over 500 authority staff were trained, and the projects scope includes 24/7 technical support and maintenance. The system also integrates various sales channels, including web platforms, mobile apps, and self-service terminals.

The International Road Federation (IRF) is a global, not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting safe, sustainable, and efficient road networks worldwide. Malabar Gold & Diamonds Opens US Flagship Showroom in Los Angeles, Plans to Launch 20 New Showrooms Worldwide in October

Malabar Gold & Diamonds, one of the worlds largest jewellery groups, has opened its US flagship showroom in Los Angeles, marking a significant milestone in its growth within North America. This new showroom is the largest and fifth location for Malabar Gold & Diamonds in the USA.

The inauguration ceremony was led by California Congresswoman Michelle Steele, with Malabar Group Chairman MP Ahammed, Vice Chairman KP Abdul Salam, International Operations Managing Director Shamlal Ahamed, North America Regional Head Joseph Eapan, and other senior management in attendance.

Spanning 6,500 square feet in Artesia City, the showroom boasts over 30,000 jewellery designs from 20 countries and features around 25 exclusive brands. Customers can also personalize their jewellery selections. To celebrate the opening, all customers will receive guaranteed Gold Coins with the purchase of Diamond and Precious Gem Jewellery, an offer valid until November 3rd.

The company has ambitious plans for expansion, targeting cities such as San Francisco, Seattle, Austin, Tampa, Virginia, Detroit, Houston, Charlotte, Phoenix, New York, and San Diego. In Canada, the brand will extend its presence into British Columbia and Alberta. Of the 20 new showrooms set to launch in October, seven are already operational, with 13 more to follow in the USA, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and India.
