In a dramatic turn of events reminiscent of the acclaimed series ‘Breaking Bad’, the Chennai police have dismantled a clandestine laboratory involved in the production of methamphetamine, leading to the arrest of seven individuals, including five engineering graduates and a gold-medal-winning postgraduate chemistry student.
The operation was uncovered when law enforcement raided the secret facility set up by the group in the city. The police recovered 245 grams of methamphetamine, along with two laptops and seven mobile phones during the bust. The investigation revealed that the group initially engaged in drug peddling, sourcing small quantities of meth from an individual named Arun Kumar, who has a history of assault charges. Inspired by the prospect of manufacturing the drug themselves, the group recruited the chemistry student to facilitate the process and acquire the necessary chemicals.
One of the arrested men misled his parents by claiming he was opening a café, which led them to borrow money to support his supposed entrepreneurial venture. “His parents had no idea about his involvement in drug-related activities,” noted a police officer.
The police are now actively searching for two other suspects believed to be connected to the drug trade, identified as Arun Kumar and Karthik.
In light of this incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has launched a campaign urging the youth to steer clear of drugs, emphasizing the importance of making informed and healthy choices. The crackdown reflects ongoing efforts by authorities to combat the narcotics crisis in the region.
